'Unacceptable and unjust': Community demands action at Fort Lee rally for Victoria Lee

"Justice for Victoria Lee."

"No more silence, no more violence."

"No justice, no peace."

Those were some of the words that rang out at a rally, held Thursday afternoon in Fort Lee, seeking justice for Victoria Lee, 25, who was fatally shot by police in her apartment in July.

Signs displaying similar sentiments were scattered across the lawn behind the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center, accompanied by several empty 5-gallon plastic water jugs. The family said Lee was holding a jug when fatally shot

"What happened to Victoria was wrong, unacceptable and unjust in every measure of these words," said Elise Tao, co-leader of Bergen County Students Demand Action. "A moment of crisis should be met with compassion and de-escalation, not deadly force. So, tell me, why is that so hard to understand?"

Speakers at the rally included representatives from several organizations including AAPI New Jersey, Stop AAPI Hate, Black Lives Matter Paterson and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
